OBITUARY

MRS SARAH H. HARVEY

 

A very old resident of Beechworth, Mrs Sarah Hannah Harvey, passed away at her residence, William Street Beechworth on Saturday, 8th April. She was the second daughter of the late Thomas and Emily Gentle, and at the time of her death was in her 89th year, having been born in Eldorado on 15 July 1862. Mrs Harvey had been a resident of Beechworth for 55 years, where she and her husband, the late Mr. William Samuel Harvey removed a few years after their marriage at Ballarat on 10th November 1886. Mr Harvey died on 31 December 1937 and Mrs Harvey had since had the companionship of her widowed daughter Mrs W. Smith and the loving interest of other members of her family which comprised Lillie (Mrs F. Jarvis, Beechworth), Ernest (Beechworth), Bertie (Albury NSW), Arthur (deceased), Elsie (Mrs W. Smith, Beechworth) and Roy (Beechworth). There are 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, George and Mark and a sister, Ann (Mrs Jenkins) are deceased. In the early part of her life Mrs Harvey was an officer in the Salvation Army and for over 60 years had been a devout member of the Methodist Church. For the past year she had been in failing health, and had been confined to her bed for two weeks prior to her death. Following a service at Beechworth Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. R. Huxtable on Monday, 9th April, the funeral took place at the Beechworth Cemetery. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. R. Huxtable and Pastor R. Ganderton. Mr. W. Guthrie had charged of the funeral arrangements.
