OBITUARY

MRS IDA JARVIS

A life-long and much respected resident of Beechworth, Mrs Ida Jarvis passed away after about a month's illness at the Ovens District Hospital on Sunday last. Mrs Jarvis was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs George Faulkner who resided at Newtown, Beechworth, and was born at Edwards Town in South Australia in the year 1856. She arrived in Beechworth with her parents when she was six years old and lived here ever since and could, therefore, claim to be one of the town's oldest residents. Her parents were foundation members of the Beechworth Congregational church and Mrs Jarvis had been a staunch adherent and had rendered the church valuable assistance throughout her life. In addition, she had taken an interest in many of the town's activities and assisted its charities and will be much missed by a large circle of friends. In the year 1875, the late Mrs Jarvis married Mr. Henry J. Jarvis who was later a councillor of the shire and a justice of the peace, who died 18 years ago. Their surviving children are Herbert (Preston), Alice (Mrs Dumbrell, Canterbury) and Frank (Beechworth) and they lost a son (Alan) at the War. There are also five great grandchildren. Her surviving brothers and sisters are George (Yarragon), Fred (Leongatha) and Nellie (Alburn). Prior to the funeral which took place to the Beechworth Cemetery on Monday, a short service was conducted by the Rev. E. Watts (Congregational), assisted by the Rev. J. S. Fletcher (Methodist) at the Congregational Church. The burial at the graveside was read by the Rev,. E. Watts.
