The radar was full of octal based valves typical of the 1950's.

The Bureau's radars all had a modification (designed by the British) for Balloon tracking called the Extended Range Delay Unit which provided three ranges of 0 to 30, 30-60 and 60 to 90 thousand yards.

Spark-gap transmitter
This was the only radar the Bureau operated with a Spark-gap modulator and it had to be cleaned every few days.

The Woomera radar was fitted with a Range multiplier and Thyratron modulator with lower PRF as designed by A. L. West whilst he was working for the Weapons Research Establishment (WRE), The radar at that time was under the care Trevor Donald, Obs/Radio. (Trevor was later to become in charge of the NSW techs as Regional Maintenance Officer.)
